Many patients contact a psychotherapist or counsellor because of generalised concerns for their mental health. They may be experiencing low-level symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety. Or they may be exhibiting unhealthy behaviours such as unprovoked aggression, panic attacks, early stage phobias or symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and be searching for therapies to help them address these issues.
Psychotherapy for emotional conditions
As a trained psychologist with extensive clinical experience, I use behavioural therapies with my patients to address these lower level emotional concerns. Behavioural therapy begins from the premise that all behaviours are learned during our formative experiences and, just as they were learned, we can learn to unlearn them and replace them with new, positive behaviours.
The role of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
The most commonly applied form of this behavioural therapy is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This treatment applies the premise that our thoughts influence our emotional states and actions. Unresolved issues are examined during therapy as a means of unlocking and redirecting an individual’s learned behavioural patterns, so that they are transformed from unhealthy to healthier ones.
