Mental health issues do not discriminate, and they affect us all, regardless of age, background, gender or sexuality. As we lead increasingly stressful and complex lives, any one of us can find themselves struggling with depression or anxiety.
Counselling for anxiety and depression in London
Causes of anxiety and depression will vary from individual to individual. Psychologists understand that we all experience an internal dialogue, and that certain events and experiences in our lives – such as bereavement, redundancy or illness – can disturb this inner dialogue and push individuals towards anxiety and depression, and associated negative behaviours. Issues we have struggled with through childhood and adolescence – such as sexuality or body image – can also often manifest in later life with similar consequences.
The psychotherapeutic process
As a London-based psychologist with extensive professional training and clinical experience, I believe that entering into meaningful dialogue can help us to think differently about many of the issues that push us towards anxiety and depression. This type of cognitive analytical therapy provides us with the space and focus to identity our negative thoughts and behaviours and, once they have been identified, to work on alternative and more constructive ways of seeing and relating to ourselves, as well as to the important people in our lives. This greater acceptance of ourselves, and of those around us, enables greater positivity and is the first step to overcoming anxiety and depression, and of leading more fulfilling lives.
